Students are an integral part of The INN’s mission to promote awareness and meet the needs of hungry and homeless Long Islanders. Here are some ways students can make a difference in the lives of so many.
The INN’s Youth Advisory Board is made up of High School student volunteer representatives (grades 9-12) from various schools.
Our goal is to help find ways to educate and engage youth about hunger and homelessness on Long Island, while offering hands on volunteer opportunities to help make a difference.

We are always looking for students to come and volunteer at one of our Soup Kitchen locations. In order to volunteer during the hours meals are served, students must be 16 years of age or older. Volunteers assist in preparing and serving the day’s meal, sorting and stocking the pantry and clothing room, as well as clearing and cleaning tables when guests are finished their meal. The main volunteer shift is Monday through Friday from 8:30AM – 2:00PM. All volunteers must commit to the full shift, there are no partial shifts available. (ALL VOLUNTEER DATES MUST BE SCHEDULED IN ADVANCE).
You should dress comfortably and bring a baseball cap or hat to keep your hair back. You may also want to bring lunch or a snack to have during the break/volunteer meeting at 11:00 am. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your warm smile to help brighten the day for those we serve.
Students who are between 10 and 15 years old are welcome to come in, with supervision, to volunteer at the Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen, located in Hempstead, between 2:30PM and 4:30PM. (Mondays and Wednesdays only). During this time, students will help sort food and clothing, prepare shower bags, fill the library with books, and help prepare the facility for the next day.
