Admit it…
You spend a lot of time on social media. It’s ok. I know I love connecting with my family, hearing about breaking news and checking out what old friends are up to. I also work for The INN, and social media management is part of my job. I have spent the last five years telling everyone who will listen about what this organization has done with Dignity, Respect and Love for the past 35 years to help Long Islanders living in poverty . So imagine my excitement when I was able to use my scrolling time for good, instead of the usual combination of divided political views and videos of squirrels on water skis. (also see: bulldogs on skateboards, cats knocking over glasses of water, etc., etc…)
Facebook Fundraisers has recently given all users the opportunity to create their own fundraisers on their personal pages in support of nonprofit organizations they believe in. So, for my 41st birthday in March, I decided to give it a shot. In less than five minutes, I was able to create a fundraiser for The INN and share with my network of friends and followers. I explained in my story why it meant so much to me that they make a donation to my cause in honor of my special day. The response was INNcredible! I set what I thought was a modest goal of $500, and in just a few days, I exceeded my goal and raised $600 to support The INN’s programs! I was truly humbled and felt so much love. Some of the donors were obvious, (like my mom), but I was shocked to see old college and high school friends, neighbors and their family members, people I haven’t spoken to in ages, who all supported my love and passion for this organization.
The good news is, you don’t have to be an INN employee to create a fundraiser. You don’t have to be a social media guru, a volunteer, or even live on Long Island to create a campaign that assists The INN in feeding, housing and assisting Long Islanders in need. All you need is a computer (or a phone), a few people that trust and believe in you, and a desire to make a difference. The INN is a verified nonprofit on Facebook, so the funds are transferred to the organization directly and it doesn’t cost you a penny. You can do it to celebrate a milestone birthday, remember someone special or just because you know we count on the generosity of others to keep The INN’s doors open for another 35 years. It’s easy. Start making those scrolls count for good!
