Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen and Center for Transformative Change Resource Center
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, The INN, like many other organizations, has been forced to modify services to the guests, while continuing to serve the community in the best way possible. The Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen, the largest soup kitchen on Long Island, has shifted from serving hot meals to a bag lunch program, since the building closed to guests in order to adhere to state and CDC guidelines and restrictions on March 16th. Each weekday, a limited number of volunteers assemble lunch bags of sandwiches, snacks and beverages to give out to all who come to the door. Every Friday, pantry bags of grocery items are provided, as well as limited supplies of personal care items and diapers. Between March and September, over 125,000 meals have been served to over 26,000 guests.
Volunteers of all ages, creeds and backgrounds in addition to a team of trained staff members continue to operate the soup kitchen each weekday. There are no questions asked of anyone in need, and everyone is referred to as a guest and treated with dignity and respect. The Mary Brennan INN continues to be a safe space environment, free of judgement, where all requests for help are addressed in a dignified and swift manner.
In addition to the Mary Brennan INN, for more than 30 years The INN has also provided support and assistance to over 25 individual community soup kitchen efforts who have provided over 300,000 meals annually across Long Island. Utilizing The INN’s guidance and support, these individual community soup kitchens have now decided to operate independently of The INN, and some have become their own not-for-profit organizations, thanks to the years of support from their local communities and The INN.
