Back to School- Student INNvolvement - 09/05/2017

September is here and Long Island students are headed back into the classroom! Here are a few ways that students can get INNvolved at The INN, for community service credit and the great feeling you can get by helping others who are less fortunate in our own Long Island communities.

  • High School Students – Join the Youth Advisory Board!

This high school student group, made up of students from schools all over Long Island, is the perfect way for a 9th-12th grader to get INNvolved. Meetings are held in the evenings at the Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen during the school year between October and April. At least two student-organized fundraising events take place in the fall and spring, and every meeting ends with a hands-on volunteer project in the soup kitchen. Community service credit hours are given to students who attend meetings and volunteer to help during the fundraisers. The first meeting of the 2017-2018 year will be held Thursday, October 5th at 6:00pm.
For more information and to RSVP for the first meeting, click here or contact Dana Lopez, Director of Marketing & Communications at dlopez@the-inn.org

  •  Hold a Fundraiser at School or in Your Community

    – Fundraisers are a great way to support The INN. We are a privately funded organization and literally every penny counts! Fundraisers are easy and FUN, which is right there in the word FUNdraiser! No amount is too small and all donations are tax deductible. Here are a few ideas:

    • Collect coins to “Make Change”
    • Donate funds from a community garage sale
    • Host a Candygram fundraiser at school for Valentine’s Day or Easter
    • Host a dress down day at school. (ie: Students donate to wear jeans on Friday)
    • Be creative! Make up your own!
  • Organize a Collection Drive of Needed Items

The INN accepts lots of donations, why not hold a collection drive of items with your classmates, neighbors, or family? Throughout the year, we always need food and in-season clothing and shoes for all sizes, ages men, women and children. Hold a specialized drive for canned soup during the “SOUPerbowl” or brand new socks during “SOCKtober,” or something else just as fun and creative! For a list of our current needs, click here

  • VOLUNTEER

Although all volunteers have to be at least 16 years old to volunteer in the soup kitchen during serving time, children as young as 10 are permitted to volunteer during our afternoon clean-up shift, when our guests have left the building for the day. Shift times are Monday-Friday, 8:30am-2:00pm (16 & up only), and Mondays & Wednesdays from 2:30pm-4:45pm (Ages 10 & up – must be accompanied by an adult.
